Week 34 – The Identity of Self and the Power of Daily Intention

This week’s habit is a big one for me, bigger than I expected. I have set intentions before, but if I’m honest, I’ve done it half-heartedly, treating it like another “should” to check off, never quite touching the identity of self underneath it.

Quick Summary: Daily Intention and the Identity of Self

It wasn’t until I sat with the question, ” What does it really mean to set a daily intention, that I realised I’d been missing the whole point. This small daily practice has become a quiet builder of the identity of self, not another task, but a way of choosing who I am before the day chooses for me.

Why an Intention Isn’t a Goal

An intention isn’t a goal. It’s not another task to squeeze into an overflowing to-do list. It’s not about pushing harder or doing more. An intention is energy, the way I choose to show up, the lens I see my day through, the vibration I carry into every conversation.

As I look back, I can see how much intention has already shaped this year. At the very beginning, I set my year-long intention: to be 1% better each day. That one choice changed the course of my life, pulling me forward through moments I wanted to stop, and reminding me that small, consistent shifts are exactly how the identity of self actually gets rebuilt.

Year-Long Intention vs. Daily Intention

But now, at Week 34, I can feel this new layer calling me. Not just carrying a big-picture WHY, but aligning myself each morning with how I want to live, feel, and show up.

What This Looks Like Each Morning

Each morning, I carve out space in my ritual. I write down three things I want to accomplish, but alongside that, I set my intention, not as another item on the list, but as the energy I want to bring. Maybe it’s ease. Maybe it’s clarity. Maybe it’s moving through the day with peace, small, deliberate choices that quietly shape the identity of self I’m becoming.

Nine Months of Revolutionary Change

When I first began this 12-month journey, 365 days of change felt like a mountain. But looking back over these nine months, it’s been the most revolutionary thing I’ve done for myself. I’ve learned what health means to me, what my relationships need, and how to truly nurture myself. I used to live in reaction: fast, furious, urgent, and stress carved itself into my body.

That awareness alone has been life-changing, and it’s rebuilt the identity of self from the inside out, the same identity-level work I explore with women inside Reclaim Her, and the same daily consistency I hold myself to inside Promise Kept. Now I see daily intention as the next level of that same awareness. If my year-long intention carried me this far, what could a daily one do?

Conclusion

This is the habit I’m choosing for Week 34, not as another job, but as the heartbeat of my mornings. So here’s my challenge to you: tomorrow morning, before the rush kicks in, pause and set one clear intention. Ask yourself, “How do I want to feel today?”

Notice what happens. Notice how you show up differently. If you’re curious how daily practices like this shape the identity of self over time, you can learn more about Transformational Coaching, or read about working together on my Work With Me page. Because it’s not about doing more, it’s about living with more awareness, presence, and the kind of peace that comes from a settled identity of self.

FAQ’s

What’s the difference between an intention and a goal?

A goal is something to achieve. An intention is how you want to feel or show up while doing it, it’s about energy, not outcome.

How long does it take to set a daily intention?

Just a moment. One word or feeling, chosen deliberately before the day takes over, is enough to shape how the day unfolds.

Can a daily intention really affect how others respond to me?

Yes. The energy you carry into a room tends to shape the tone of interactions, even without saying anything about it directly.

How does a daily habit like this actually shape identity of self?

Repeated small choices compound. Over time, how you consistently choose to show up becomes how you actually see yourself.

What if I forget to set an intention some mornings?

That’s normal. The practice is more powerful when built consistently over time than done perfectly every single day.
